Kawasaki Tank Skin Installation

KAWASAKI Tank Installation Instructions

Delicate hook application was required to provide the, streamline design of your tank skin, therefore it requires CAREFUL installation. These hooks can easily tear out if much tension is pulled on them, so keep your thumbs and fingers on them until the installation is complete. Use patience when taking it on and off. It may take several warm days for creases and wrinkles to settle out.

Clean OFTEN with "VINYL FINISH" cleaner ONLY!

        - WAX YOUR TANK , at least twice with wax

        - It will install easier if it is WARM. On the ZX-12 it must be warm.

        - You may need to reposition or cut your rubber tank mounts or rubber strips.

        - You may trim 3/8" off the hooks if needed.

        - REMOVE Front Seat to install tank skin

ZX-6E Pull out top of side panel at tank. Remove the 2 bolts at front tank mount. Lift about 2". In rear, pull off vent hoses, slip sides of skin behind side panels, and vents through. Attach hooks. Check for evenness on both sides. Slip the front corners where bungie emerges under the tank, then attach the bungie over front of tank. The bungie rests on top of tank bracket.

ZX-6R (F) '95-'97. Remove bolts for the side panels. (Located 1" behind the tank).

Pop out front ends of side panels. To put on tank skin: Attach side hooks (hook them under

bottom edge of tank). Slide bungie over the front edge of tank. Tuck bungie under the front

corners of the tank. Slowly slide the back end of skin down into position. Check for

straightness. The bottom hem tucks down behind the side panels.

ZX-6R '98- (YOU may want to lift the tank a bit!) Start with side hooks, then rear hooks.

ZX-7'S

'89-'92 ZX-7: Disconnect the air duct tubes during installation.

'91,'92 ZX-7: Put the hooks on, then bungie. Slip bungie over the front edge of tank bracket.

'89,'90 ZX-7: Attach front hooks first. Slip them under the tank positioned 1" behind the rubber dampers (This is where there's the largest gap.) Ease the skin back into position.  Attach rear set of hooks. Then slip bungie over front of tank.

'93 -'95 ZX-7: Pull out top of side panel at tank. Remove the 2 bolts at front tank mount. Pull the center of the bungie up and over the top of the tank bracket (Under the bars that come down). Bungie sits between bars and tank. Lift tank about 2". Slip the front corners (where bungie emerges) UNDER the tank rubbers (front-sides), then slip rear sides of skin behind side panels. Attach hooks.

'96 – newer ZX-7: Loosen front bolts of side panels. Slide rear end of skin under them. Attach hooks.

ZX-9 '98 -  : Put rear hooks on first, then sides, then bungee.

ZX-9 '94-'97 and ZX-11C (NOT D)

Loosen side panels at tank side. Remove the plastic (lower dash) covers just in front of the tank. (On ZX-9 remove "well nuts"). Put bungie over front of tank, and slide back of cover down rear of tank. Hold in place and slip hooks under edge of tank. To determine proper alignment of cover, the stitching of hem should lay at edge of side panel,(tuck between side panel and tank).

The little hole in the tank skin fits directly around the center vent tube where it emerges from back of the tank.

ZX-11 D Gently open the two front hooks, one at a time, and hook under the edge of tank as far toward the front as possible.

Pull cover down over back of tank. The top/front should be positioned about 1/2" behind gas cap. Then attach rear hooks at the apex of the curve at bottom of tank. Pull bungie up over the front edge of tank. Reposition cover if needed to make bungie rest snugly in the bottom lip of tank.

ZX-12 Remove the tank (cowl)(yep,10 bolts). Attach the hooks. Set it on a table right side up, and stand behind it. Make sure bra is centered. Pull the (unpeeled) Velcro tabs up around in front of the bolt tabs by holding the front corners of bra with your thumbs on the outside, and pull it forward snug (clean this area good). With your fingers, feel where the Velcro should go and then peel the backing off the adhesive Velcro when you know exactly where it should be stuck on. Pull it to the inside of the tank and apply pressure. Make sure the skin is even before you put tank back on the bike.

ZRX-1100 Attach rear hooks. Slip bungie up over entire front of tank. Tuck front corners under.

* NEW àZX-14 Remove seat. Remove 2 bolts on side panels completely (one bolt on black panel and one bolt on colored panel per side). Slide bra in between panels and align. Make sure not to tighten panel bolts until bra is centered.
