SUZUKI & YAMAHA Tank Skin Installation

SUZUKI & YAMAHA Tank Skin Installation

Delicate hook application was required to provide the skin-tight, streamline design of your tank skin, therefore it requires CAREFUL INSTALLATION. These hooks can easily tear out if much tension is pulled on them, so keep your thumbs and fingers on them until the installation is complete. Use patience when taking it on and off. Treat it like SKIN. It may take several warm days for creases and wrinkles to relax.

Before Installing: - Clean your tank thoroughly, especially where the Velcro will stick. (Dirt can damage paint)

- Installation is much easier if tank and skin are warm. (you can put skin in

clothes dryer by itself on high for 1 minute)

- You may need to reposition or cut your rubber tank mounts or rubber

strips on tank or tank side panels.

- You can trim up to 3/8" off the hooks if needed.

- Remove front seat before installing

Put rear clips on first. Stand behind the bike and align the skin on straight. The bungie is designed to rest on top of the tank bracket, not under the tank!

GSXR'S  ‘88-'95 models pull air tube from tank while installing.

'92-'93 GSXR 600,  '93-'95 750, and all 1100's: loosen front bolts of side panels before attaching skin.

From the point where the bungie emerges from the vinyl let bungie rest in the bottom lip of tank and around the front.

'96- newer: From the point where the bungie emerges, let the bungie slip under tank - after you put it up over front bracket. It’s fairly self explanatory.

KATANAS : Undo the rear tank bolts, the fairing bolts and plug-ins near the tank. Start rear clips on first. Ease the skin firmly forward into place. Hold bungie up over the tank, slip tank back into place. For models '87-'97: Bungie rests on top of the tank bracket.

For '98 + models: put the bungie under the brackets on side of tank. In the front, the bungie rests in the channel on the side edge of tank.

Bandit / RF /SV/ TL1000/ YZF / R6 (SV, '97+ YZF 600, '97 YZF 1000: loosen side panels at FRONT.) Put on rear hooks, then slip bungie over tank.

GSX 1300: Undo the front tank mount bolts. Slip on the 4 rear hooks. Slip bungie up on top of tank bracket. Lift tank to put on remaining hooks. From the point where the bungie emerges from the vinyl let bungie slip under tank and up over front bracket.

R1: '98-'99: unsnap the on plastic panels at rear sides of tank. Make sure clips are securely hooked on before snapping the velcro back in place. The rear hooks attach to the bracket beyond the rear of the plastic panel. (This one is difficult to describe).

R1:  ’00-01:  Remove seat and the plastic side panel at rear of tank. Attach the rear center hook (on the hole in the bracket). Pull rear corners down over the bolt brackets (putting the bolt brackets through the square hole). Pull bungie up over the  front of  the tank. Make sure skin is on straight and even on both sides. (Stand behind the bike and look down the center) . Check for snug positioning of the rear Velcro tabs before peeling off the backing. (You may want to do this while sitting on the bike). The Velcro sticks to the bottom of the tank, beyond the little black strips under the tank. Now do the same with the front Velcro tabs. MAKE SURE to thoroughly clean the spot under the tank for velcro to stick.

R1:  ’02-. Remove seat. Remove plastic side panels (remove bolt & slide them forward). Use the bolts to anchor the skin in the rear, while you position the skin. Pull bungie up over the front of  the tank. Stand over the bike and check for even and tight positioning before sticking on Velcro. Thoroughly clean the spots on the tank for velcro to stick. Removing the foam strip inside of the plastic panels, will make them go back on easier. Put bolt through panel and skin.

FZR 1000: Undo bolt in rear of tank, lift a few inches. It is easiest to install the front 2 hooks first by starting them a few inches back, where there's a larger gap between the tank and frame. Put on rear hooks. Ease the skin forward into position. Check for evenness on both sides. Wrap bungie up and over front of tank. Position it under the front tank mount brackets. The center will wrap nicely in front of the center bracket.  All other FZR’s are fairly self explanatory.

FZ-1 Slide rear strap under back bracket, and close it. Gently pull bungie up over the front of the tank. Where bungie emerges, let vinyl ends slip under the edge of tank Make sure skin is on straight and even on both sides. Stand behind and in front the bike and look down the center. Check for snug and EVEN positioning of the Velcro tabs before peeling off the backing. You may need to lift the front of the tank. The sticky back Velcro sticks to the bottom of the tank. Thoroughly clean the spot under the tank for velcro to stick. Do the rear set, and then front Velcro tabs.

In the front where bungie emerges, let vinyl ends slip under the edge of tank, if it will. Check for evenness on both sides, before putting seats back on. After awhile in warm weather it will mold to the tank better. FREQUENTLY WAX AND CHECK TANK TO BE FREE OF DIRT. Dirt may scratch the tank.
